I'm discovering that being a photographer can be an odd business, especially when photographing other people doing things. You turn up, introduce yourself, and then spend the rest of the time pretending not to be there..creeping around hoping that the people you're photographing don't notice you, so you can get your shots.
As some of you may know I spent 6 months of this year creeping around various theatres, venues & circus tents trying to be invisible, photographing City Circ, London's first ever season for theatre & contemporary circus. Nobody commissioned me to do it, I called someone up one day and said, 'I want to take pictures of all these circus shows and put on an exhibition, have you got anybody doing it?'. Twenty shows later..and I got my pictures exhibited in three different venues, and invited to join Jacksons Lane arts centre as a resident invisible person.
Yesterday I had a meeting with ArenaPAL The Best Image Library for the Performing Arts, as it says on their page on facebook, although not the most popular on facebook, there were only 7 fans, 8 now.
I found out about them when I was photographing Mimbre's new show Until Now at the Laban Theatre this summer where I met established photographer Eric Richmond who recommended I contact them.
They hold an archive of over 2 million images including opera, dance, ballet & musicals, and represent collections from a number of renowned international photographers. They like my circus pictures, so I signed the contract, and now.. well it looks like I have an Agent!
